Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian
Patmos, Greece, Greece
The Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian is one of the most important religious sites in Greece, located on the island of Patmos.
It was founded in 1088 by Saint Christodoulos after receiving the island from the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, and it was built as a fortified monastery to protect against pirate attacks and invasions. Dedicated to Saint John the Theologian, traditionally believed to have written the Book of Revelation on Patmos, the monastery has been a major center of Greek Orthodox worship, learning, and pilgrimage for more than nine centuries.
The monastery resembles a fortress, with high defensive walls dominating the hilltop town of Chora. Inside are historic churches, chapels, valuable religious relics, rare manuscripts, impressive frescoes, and an important library that preserves centuries of Christian heritage. Together with the nearby Cave of the Apocalypse and the historic center of Chora, the monastery was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
