Built primarily during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties in the 17th and 18th centuries, it consists of numerous siheyuan-style courtyards built into the hillside and fortified with high crenellated walls and defensive towers. The estate is renowned for its grand scale, comprising 640 rooms across 19 gardens and nine gates.

It was the residence of the Chen family, who rose from farmers to influential scholars, officials, and miners, producing many mandarins and cultural figures. Architectural highlights include multi-story defensive towers, ancestral clan temples, study rooms, intricate gardens like Zhiyuan Garden, and the Tower of Imperial Handwriting containing plaques and gifts from the Kangxi Emperor.

The estate historically guarded the family during times of unrest and symbolizes significant cultural and political influence in northern China. It remains a prominent historical and tourist site, reflecting China's architectural heritage and social history .
