Idanre Hills, also known as Oke Idanre, is a group of impressive rocky hills located in Idanre town, Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria. The hills rise about 3,000 feet (914 meters) above sea level and are known for their dramatic scenery, unique rock formations, lush vegetation, and panoramic views over the surrounding land.

For nearly a thousand years, the people of Idanre lived on top of these hills. The hills gave them safety from attack and wild animals, and the old settlement included houses, the king’s palace, shrines, burial grounds, and courts. In 1923, most of the population moved down to the plains, but the old town and its relics are still found at the top, accessible by a climb of 660 steps.

Idanre Hills remain important to local culture and spirituality. Many myths and legends are attached to the hills. Some famous places on the hills include Owa’s Palace, Agboogun’s Footprint, Thunder Water (Omi Apaara), the Old Court, unreadable signs on rocks, and sacred shrines. The hills are also the focus of important festivals, such as the Ogun Festival and the Ije Festival, which bring people back together to celebrate their heritage.

The hills have a rich ecosystem. Special animals like the hyrax, which is a small tailless mammal, live among the rocks. There are also monkeys and bats, and the area is popular for nature research. The hills are known for their clear springs, unique plants, and clean air.
