Islamic Settlement of Ponta do Castelo
Vila do Bispo, Portugal, Portugal
The Islamic Settlement of Ponta do Castelo, also known as the Islamic Fishermen's Settlement, is an archaeological site on a coastal promontory south of Porto do Forno near Carrapateira in Vila do Bispo municipality, Algarve, southern Portugal.
Dating to the 12th-13th centuries during the Almohad Muslim period, it served as a seasonal outpost where locals supplemented farming and herding with marine resources like fish and shellfish—a practice persisting into the 20th century.
Excavated in 2001-2002 to counter erosion threats, it represents Portugal's first studied Islamic fishing village, revealing structures integrated into the cliffside amid prehistoric and Roman layers.
