Iwokrama Forest is a vast protected rainforest nature reserve covering around 3,716 square kilometers (371,000 hectares) in central Guyana, located within the Guiana Shield.

It features pristine lowland tropical forest, bordered by dramatic geological formations such as the Pakaraima Mountains and intersected by rivers including the Essequibo and Burro-Burro. The forest supports exceptional biodiversity with more than 1,500 plant species and hundreds of animal species, such as jaguars, giant river otters, and harpy eagles.

Established in 1996 as a model for sustainable forest management, Iwokrama is co-managed by the Guyanese government and the Iwokrama International Centre, blending conservation, scientific research, and ecotourism. Visitors can experience rich wildlife, canopy walks, hiking trails, and river boat tours, while staying at eco-lodges that emphasize sustainability. The forest plays a critical role in preserving ecological balance and offers a rare glimpse into one of the world’s most intact tropical rainforests.
