Jardim Botânico do Porto
Porto, Portugal, Portugal
Jardim Botânico do Porto (Porto Botanical Garden) is a 4-hectare botanical garden located at Rua do Campo Alegre, 1191, in the Lordelo do Ouro neighborhood of Porto, Portugal, within the historic Quinta do Campo Alegre estate (also known as Casa dos Andresen).
Although its origins date back to 1837 with a decree by Passos Manuel establishing the first botanical garden in Porto, the current garden was officially created in 1951 when it was transferred to the University of Porto and developed by the Faculty of Sciences, evolving from the former botanical institute of Gonçalo Sampaio and the Botany Department.
The garden was originally laid out in romantic style in 1895 by João Henrique Andresen, a port-wine merchant, and the estate was formerly the residence of the Andresen family—where writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen played and drew inspiration for some of her works. The garden is organized into three levels (patamares) with distinct characteristics.
The upper level features formal gardens compartmentalized by high hedges of century-old camellias, including bosquetes, the Jardim do Xisto, Jardim do Peixe, Roseiral (rose garden), and Jardim dos Jotas; the middle level houses the Cactos (cacti) Garden and greenhouses; and the lower level contains the arboretum, deer enclosure (presa), and the large lake (lago grande).
