Jardín Botánico de Asunción
Asunción, Paraguay, Paraguay
The Jardín Botánico de Asunción, officially named the Jardín Botánico y Zoológico de Asunción (Botanical Garden and Zoo of Asunción), is the main green space and largest "lungs" of Asunción, Paraguay, serving as a vital urban oasis that houses over 245 hectares of natural forest, diverse flora and fauna, and important historical buildings.
Founded in 1914 and designed in 1919 by German scientists Carlos Friebig and Ana Gertz, the garden was created on land that was formerly the country estate and residence of Carlos Antonio López, Paraguay's first constitutional president, giving it significant historical and cultural importance beyond its ecological value.
The botanical garden portion covers more than 110 hectares of Paraguayan native flora, featuring over 110 hectares of lush forest with centuries-old trees, shaded walking paths, a rose garden, a Japanese lagoon, and the Museum of Natural History which displays preserved and dried animal specimens.
