Javarzay

Chef-Boutonne, France, France

Javarzay is a historic district of Chef-Boutonne in the Deux-Sèvres department of western France, best known for the impressive Château de Javarzay. Built in the early 16th century by François de Rochechouart, the château is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the former Poitou region and is a protected historic monument. The château combines elegant Renaissance features with elements of a medieval fortress, including towers, moats, and fortified details. Although parts of the original structure have been lost over time, the remaining buildings, chapel, and grounds continue to showcase its historical importance. Today, the site serves as a museum and cultural attraction, featuring exhibits on local history, traditional Poitou headdresses, and the life of industrial pioneer Jean‑François Cail, who was born in Chef‑Boutonne. The surrounding park, arboretum, and lake add to its appeal for visitors. Javarzay remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the region, offering a blend of architectural heritage, local history, and scenic surroundings.
