Jebel Benathi

Haraz Region, west of Sana'a, Yemen

Jebel Benathi is a striking mountain peak in Yemen’s Haraz Region, located west of Sana'a in the dramatic Sarat mountain range that rises between the Red Sea coast (Tihamah) and the highland capital. The area is famous for its breathtaking terraced landscapes, where steep slopes are carved into fertile agricultural steps bordered by high stone walls, supporting crops like barley, millet, lentils, coffee and qat. The Haraz region is also known for its fortified stone villages clinging to inaccessible rocky spires, with houses built directly into cliff faces as both homes and defensive walls, creating a seamless blend of architecture and natural terrain. Historically, Haraz was the stronghold of the powerful 11th‑century Sulayhid dynasty and has long been an Ismaili Shiʿite community, adding deep cultural and religious significance to the mountain’s scenic beauty. Elevated in altitude and relatively secure, the region offers adventurous hiking through spectacular villages such as Al‑Hajjarah and Manakha, and is recognized on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List for its outstanding cultural and natural value as one of Yemen’s most beautiful and welcoming landscapes.
