Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is a large urban botanical garden in the suburb of Emmarentia (Greenside/Emmarentia area) of Johannesburg, bordering the Emmarentia Dam and about 15 minutes’ drive north of the city centre. Established around 1969 and covering roughly 80–125 hectares, it grew from a central rose garden into an extensive landscape of lawns, trees and themed sections, including a major rose garden with thousands of varieties, indigenous tree and succulent plantings, and an herb garden featuring African medicinal and other useful plants. The gardens are popular for walking, jogging and picnicking, with paved paths, open grass areas, and views over the dam where people also enjoy boating and canoeing, and they are usually open daily from around sunrise to sunset with free admission, making them an important green recreation space for Johannesburg residents and visitors.
