Kalamata Castle is a medieval fortress that overlooks the city of Kalamata in southern Greece from a hilltop with sweeping views of the Messinian Gulf and the surrounding countryside.

The present castle was built by Frankish rulers in the 13th century on the site of an earlier Byzantine fortification, which itself stood on the ancient acropolis of Pharae. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of Franks, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, reflecting the region’s turbulent history.

It served as an important military and administrative center and was closely associated with the powerful Villehardouin family, rulers of the Principality of Achaea. Although parts of the fortress were damaged and dismantled over time, substantial sections of its walls and defenses remain. The site is especially valued for its historical significance and panoramic views over Kalamata and the surrounding landscape.
