Karababa Castle is a historic fortress overlooking the city of Chalkida from a hill in the Xirovrysi area of Evia.

Built by the Ottoman authorities in the late 17th century to defend the strategically important Euripus Strait and protect the city from Venetian attacks, it became one of the strongest fortifications in the region. The fortress features sturdy walls, bastions, defensive towers, and a commanding position that offers wide views over Chalkida and the surrounding sea.

It successfully resisted a major Venetian siege in 1688 and remained an important military stronghold until the modern Greek state was established. Today, Karababa Castle is one of Evia’s most important historical landmarks. Visitors can explore its preserved fortifications, enjoy panoramic views of the city and coastline, and see exhibitions that highlight the area’s rich medieval and Ottoman-era history.
