Kasteel de Oude Kluis
Ghent, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel de Oude Kluis is a historic castle in the Gentbrugge neighbourhood of Ghent, Belgium, standing along the Gentbruggekouter road and originally built on the site of a medieval fortress and hermitage known as a “kluis” from at least the 12th century.
The current building includes a tall central tower with very thick walls and a Gothic‑style facade, which has been repeatedly rebuilt and adapted over the centuries, with major renovations in the early 20th century by the Bruges architect Joseph Viérin.
The estate passed through several noble families, including the Minnaerts, Lefèvres de Ten Hove, and Cardon de Lichtbuer, and in recent decades was restored by a new private owner after being put up for sale in the 2000s.
Today it is a protected heritage site that remains a private residence, noted both for its long aristocratic history and as one of the oldest surviving traces of the medieval land‑reclamation movement around Ghent.
