Kasteel de Pélichy
Ghent, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel de Pélichy is a neoclassical 19th‑century castle in Gentbrugge, a northern district of Ghent, Belgium, located at Oude Brusselseweg 125 and set in a pleasant park with a pond and tall trees.
The building was erected in 1883, as indicated by inscriptions on the garden‑side façade, and was originally commissioned by Octave de Meulenaere on the occasion of his wedding to the daughter of a major landowner, giving the house a private, aristocratic character from the start.
It is a three‑storey structure with a rectangular plan, three bays wide on each façade, and a slate mansard roof, with a prominent, four‑storey, circular stair tower attached to the rear; the original brick‑and‑stone facade has been cemented, but the overall neoclassical proportions, central roof windows with wing ornaments and triangular frontons, and oeil‑de‑bœuf windows remain visible.
The estate originally included service buildings such as farm couls, stables, glasshouses and an aviary, arranged around a wall with a bridge and forming a large, self‑contained park. Over time the castle changed function: it was used as a private residence, then from 1955 to 1977 it served as a police station, and since 1977 it has been a “jeugdhuis” (youth centre) and community venue, while the surrounding park has remained public and is now known as Park de Pélichy, a shady, well‑preserved green space with a pond that is open to local residents.
