Kasteel d'Exaerde de Kerchove
Steenokkerzeel, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel d'Exaerde de Kerchove (properly Kasteel de Kerckhove d'Exaerde) is a 19th-century castle in the village of Humelgem, part of the municipality of Steenokkerzeel in Flemish Brabant, Belgium.
It was built around 1870 to 1880 in neo-Flemish Renaissance style, using red brick and natural stone, on the orders of Jules de Kerchove d'Exaerde, who was vice-president of the Court of Audit and later mayor of Steenokkerzeel from 1882 until his death in 1901.
The castle stands next to the church of Humelgem, close to the Billaststraat, and is set within a landscaped park that includes paths, lawns, and water features, forming a quiet, rural estate on the edge of the Brussels metropolitan area. After Jules de Kerchove d'Exaerde’s death, the castle and its grounds were sold to Marquis Charles de Croix, owner of the nearby Kasteel ter Ham, and from then on the estate remained in the hands of successive noble families, though it has not been widely opened as a public museum.
Today the building is recognized as protected heritage, listed in the Flemish inventory of immovable heritage, and is used mainly as a residential property and occasional venue for private events, while its distinctive neo-Flemish Renaissance façade, with gables, turrets, and ornamental stonework, remains a notable architectural landmark in Humelgem.
