Verified Kasteel Heylwegen

Evergem, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel Heylweghen (sometimes spelled Heylweghen) is a late‑18th‑century, neo‑classical country house in the village of Langerbrugge, part of Evergem in East Flanders, Belgium, located at Burggravenlaan 18.

The site was first recorded in 1379 as a rural settlement called “Goed ter Beken”, named after the Burggravenstroom stream that ran alongside it, and it later passed to the Van Heylweghen family, who gave the estate its name; in the 16th century it was damaged by Calvinists and rebuilt in 1621 as a pleasure house, which was then depicted in Sanderus’s Flandria Illustrata as “Hellewege”.

In 1749 the property came into the hands of the Borluut de Noortdonck family, and in the years around 1780 the castle was rebuilt in its present classicist form, with a seven‑bay, two‑storey plastered facade, slate mansard roof with dormer windows, and a rectangular layout set within a park that was originally surrounded by double moats that were partly filled in around 1880.

The interior is notable for its late‑rococo stuccowoodwork on walls, ceilings and around fireplaces in the entrance hall and adjoining salons, such as the former “smoke room” and ladies’ salon, and also includes a small chapel and a former convent building nearby commissioned by the Groverman family in the 19th century, who later owned the estate and turned it into a boys’ school in the 20th century before it was sold to a private owner and restored.
