Kasteel Oudeberg
Geraardsbergen, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel Oudeberg is a 19th‑century castle‑like country house and event venue on the Oudeberg (Oudenberg), the steep wooded hill behind the Heilige Kapel and next to the famous Muur van Geraardsbergen in Geraardsbergen, East Flanders.
The site originally held a small farmstead and estate owned by the linen merchant and later banker Jean‑François Spitaels, whose son Felix Spitaels substantially rebuilt and extended the buildings between about 1890 and 1895, giving the house a more “château” appearance with round corner towers and a romantic, almost fairy‑tale look, and further “kasteel‑like” changes were made in 1903–1904 by the notary Désiré De Clercq.
The present building is a two‑storey, five‑bay brick house with a slate hipped roof, round corner towers with conical spires, a central entrance risalite with a coping‑topped door, and a separate single‑storey, eight‑bay stable wing with a mansard roof, all set in a large garden and park that forms part of the protected cultural‑historical landscape of Oudeberg and its surroundings.
The castle was later owned by the families Blicken and Putseys, and since 2003 it has been in the hands of Alain Corneille, who restored it to its original state and transformed the estate into a popular location for weddings, communion parties, seminars and business events, taking advantage of its unique position on the hill overlooking the Muur and the town of Geraardsbergen.
