Kasteel Slotendries
Ghent, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel Slotendries, also known historically as the castle of the Margravine de Courtebourne and today simply called “Het Kasteel”, is a classicist country house in the Oostakker district of Ghent, situated on Onze Lieve Vrouwdreef in a park that dates back to early medieval times and was known as Slotendries.
The original domain was a medieval estate of the Abbey of Saint‑Bavo, later held by various noble families including the de Plotho, and in the late 18th century Baron Frans de Plotho, a Trappist, planned to build a Trappist monastery there, but the work was abandoned shortly after 1790 and the existing building materials were used to erect the present castle around 1800–1805.
The main building is a fully cellared, three‑storey classicist mansion of rectangular plan (five bays wide and two bays deep), with a truncated hipped roof, and was probably designed by architect J.B. Van de Cappelle; it is approached through an iron gate between Doric‑style stone pillars and an iron bridge over the moat, both dated 1833, and is set in a rectangular, wall‑enclosed park with trees and a moat.
