Verified Kasteel Ten Boekel

Evergem, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel ten Boekel, also called Goed ten Boekel, is a historic castle and surrounding estate in Langerbrugge, a village in the municipality of Evergem in East Flanders, Belgium, located along the Burggravenlaan near the Burggravenstroom.

The landholding was first recorded in 1280 as the leenhof (tenant estate) Wiendekin Gaver, a dependency of the Sint‑Baafsabdij in Ghent, and in the 14th century it passed to the prominent Gentish patrician family Borluut, who, after inheriting the lordship of Sint‑Denijs‑Boekel, gave the estate its name “Ten Boekel”.

A 16th‑century drawing by Antonius Sanderus in his Flandria Illustrata shows the castle as a double‑moated building, and although the present structure was modified in the 18th century and then extensively restored in 1895, it still closely resembles Sanderus’s depiction, with brick and sandstone walls, two‑storey wings under two gabled roofs, and central stepped gables.

The domain includes two 18th‑century service buildings, a square pigeon tower with a tent roof, and a small domestic chapel added in 1787, while the medieval double moats were gradually transformed in the 19th century into a landscape park with a central pond and green lawns, and in 1895 the salon was furnished with seven tapestries depicting views of the castle in different periods.
