Verified Kasteel Ten Velde

Lievegem, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel Ten Velde is a historic estate in Vinderhoute, part of the municipality of Lievegem in East Flanders, Belgium, located at Neerstraat 1, and one of the oldest recorded landholdings in the area, first mentioned in 1549 as “Christoffels Stalle” and later shown on Sanderus’s map as the domain of Pieter Neyt.

In the early 18th century the property came into the hands of the noble family Ponthieure de Berlaere; in the 19th century it was owned by knight Charles de Berlaere, longtime mayor of the town, who built the current pink‑coloured carriage house (wagenhuis) in the third quarter of the 19th century, probably at the end of the 18th century, and the original castle stood on a raised terrace overlooking a pond.

The castle is clearly visible from the Neerstraat and nearby walking routes, and it is part of Lievegem’s “castelsgemeente” (castle municipality) character, with its divided facades, the terrace surrounded by sandstone columns and the beautiful gardens recalling the grandeur of earlier generations, while the estate also includes a historic garden plot and pond that contribute to the rural landscape of Vinderhoute and the wider Meetjesland region.
