Kasteel Van Blekkom
Halen, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel van Blekkom is a 19th‑century neoclassical country house in the hamlet of Blekkom, part of Loksbergen in the municipality of Halen in Flemish Limburg, Belgium, built in 1859 on the site of an older farm and designed by the architect Jamaer.
The building is a freestanding brick manor of two storeys and four bays, set on a raised ground floor with grouped cellar windows, and has a slate sloping roof combined with a gable roof and a triangular pediment above the right edge of the building, while the windows and openings are finished with Ardennes stone and sandstone bands and the facade is decorated with round‑arched doorways and bay windows on the upper floor.
The manor is surrounded by a 3.80‑hectare park in a mixed, picturesque style with a heterogeneous tree border and small groups of trees around the lawn, a pond crossed by an arched bridge, entrance gates and a small chapel, and together with the adjacent, originally U‑shaped farm that was later converted into a closed farmyard, it forms a harmonious rural estate.
The castle and park are recognised as built heritage and a protected site, but the property is privately occupied and not open to the public as a museum, serving instead as a quiet, historic residence in the Halen countryside where visitors can only admire the building and its park from the outside and from nearby walking paths that link Blekkom, Loksbergen and the Hees forest area.
