Kasteel van Hocht in Lanaken, Belgium, is a striking riverside estate that originated as a 12th‑century Cistercian women’s abbey, founded around 1180 by Diederik van Lodenaken, lord of Pietersheim, and dedicated to Saint Agatha, before gradually evolving into a more secular, aristocratic residence and later a private castle.

The site was originally close to the Meuse River and was connected to the nearby castle of Pietersheim by a long avenue, but in the 19th century the construction of the Zuid‑Willemsvaart canal and, later, the Verbindingskanaal Briegden‑Neerharen cut through the old landscape, separating the abbey grounds from their former connections and giving the estate a more isolated position alongside the waterways.

The surviving buildings of the former abbey complex, including the U‑shaped farm, the former abbess’s residence (now the castle), the gatehouse, the chaplain’s house and a watermill, are largely 17th‑century structures in a restrained classical style, with the gatehouse forming part of a long enclosing wall that was built around 1622 as a measure against the weakening discipline of the convent.

In the 19th century the formal park around the residence was transformed into a landscape garden with two ponds, the Hoge and Lage Vijver, fed by the Molenbeek stream and each containing a small wooded island, while the site is now surrounded by fields, low‑stam orchards and occasional meadows bordered by tree belts, creating a quiet, green setting beside the Meuse.
