Kasteel Van Leeuwergem
Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel van Leeuwergem, also known as Leeuwergem Castle, is an elegant 18th‑century château in the village of Elene, part of Zottegem in East Flanders, Belgium, and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful baroque castles of the country.
The present building was constructed between 1762 and 1764 for the Ghent nobleman Pieter Emmanuel d’Hane, probably by the Ghent architect Jean Baptist Simoens, on the site of an earlier 15th‑century castle, and it combines a sober, symmetrical plan with Louis XV interiors and a light rococo influence, giving it the appearance of a French‑style château.
The estate is approached along a long tree‑lined avenue, a brick bridge (dating from the interwar period), and an honour court flanked by service buildings, and it sits in a large park that originally had a geometric 18th‑century layout with formal avenues, fishponds and ornamental features, later enriched by a early‑landscape “English park” area with more informal planting and water.
The gardens, designed from 1763 to 1775, are famous for their baroque order, fishponds and a unique Belgian “lover’s theatre” (a haagbeuk‑hedge amphitheatre) that has remained essentially unchanged since construction, and the wooded hunting estate surrounding the castle adds to its status as a historic “château et parc” of national significance.
