Kasteel Van Potegem
Belgium, Belgium
Kasteel van Potegem is a historic castle in Waregem, Belgium, first mentioned in the 10th century as part of lands donated to Ghent's Sint-Pietersabdij and later forming a lordship around 1260-1270.
Originally a grand residence occupied by nobles like Walter van Potegem in the 16th century, it was partially burned during Spanish reprisals, served as a boys' boarding school in 1830, and fell into disrepair before industrialist Robert Vindevogel purchased and restored it in 1930 in Neo-Baroque style by architect Jozef Viérin.
Surrounded by a picturesque park, double moat, and bridge in the city center opposite the hippodrome along the Gaverbeek, it remains private property blending medieval origins with elegant architecture.
