Verified Kasteel Van Spiere-Helkijn

Spiere-Helkijn, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel van Spiere (sometimes referred to as Kasteel van Spiere‑Helkijn by association with the municipality) is a prominent 18th‑century country castle in the village of Spiere, part of the West Flemish commune of Spiere‑Helkijn in Belgium.

The original medieval fortified castle on the site, dating from the 14th century, was destroyed by French forces in 1477 during conflicts with the Burgundian duke; only the moat, known locally as the “cave aux diables” in the woods behind the present building, and part of an old vaulted cellar survive from that older phase.

The current main building was constructed around 1710–1750, traditionally attributed to Nicolas del Fosse et d’Espierres and later to his son Baron Bruno del Fosse et d’Espierres, who in 1720 received imperial permission from Charles VI to use the title of baron and who enlarged his family’s holdings by acquiring both the lower and upper lordships of Spiere.

Architecturally, the castle is an important example of an 18th‑century West Flemish manor house, set within a large estate that originally had an 18th‑century formal park later reshaped into a 19th‑century landscape garden, with elements such as a tree‑lined avenue (Beukendreef) leading to a small chapel, park woodland, grouped trees, and a U‑shaped pond.
