Verified Kasteel Van Zonnebeke

Zonnebeke, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel van Zonnebeke is a 20th‑century “wederopbouw” (post‑WWI reconstruction) castle built in 1924 in the commune of Zonnebeke in West Flanders, set within a large park with a castle pond, a gatehouse, a small fish house, and former outbuildings such as a bakery and coach house.

The present castle replaced an earlier manor whose medieval and Renaissance history was shaped by the Augustinian abbey of Zonnebeke and the lordship of Rolleghem, and over the centuries the estate belonged to families including Van Zonnebeke, Rolleghem, and Iweins, remaining in the Iweins family until 1980 when the municipality bought the domain.

After renovation, the upper floor became a cultural and event venue while the attic rooms were used by associations, and from 1989 the building housed a local museum that in 2004 reopened as the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, dedicated to the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele and now complemented by an underground extension and a knowledge centre in the restored parish house.

Today the castle and its surrounding park form the Kasteeldomein Zonnebeke, a public cultural and recreational complex that includes the Passchendaele Museum, a municipal library called De Letterschuur, the Koklikoo café, the tourist information office, themed “Poppy gardens” remembering the eight countries involved in the battle, and the Maori monument Pou Maumahara, with walking and cycling routes linking the site to nearby war cemeteries such as Tyne Cot and the Polygon Wood.
