Kasteeldomein Notax
Destelbergen, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteeldomein Notax is a historic castle estate in the village of Destelbergen, East Flanders, Belgium, located along the Zevenrede and Eenbeekstraat in a landscape that has been associated with noble lords since the early Middle Ages.
The site likely already contained a moated castle in the early medieval period, and the name Notax is linked to the lords of Notax, who are first mentioned in the 13th century and from the early 14th century definitely held the castle; these lords were powerful enough to have their own chapel added to the parish church of Destelbergen in 1313 and to administer a lordship with a bailiff and a court of 58 subordinate holdings.
The medieval core of the estate includes a Gothic cellar known as the Malperthuus, and after a fire around 1800 the building was altered with Empire‑style elements, while the present mansion forms a coherent ensemble with a former barn that has been converted into a dwelling, all set within a park integrated into a protected village landscape that also includes the nearby castles of Succa, Crabbenburg, Te Lande and others along the Eenbeekstraat.
The castle and its surroundings are protected as a monument, and the estate is today used as a private residence and occasionally as a location for events, while its long history as a small feudal stronghold and 19th‑century country house of the Gent textile barons makes it a characteristic example of the clustered group of small castles around Ghent.
