Kasteeldomein Schouwbroek
Lievegem, Belgium, Belgium
Kasteeldomein Schouwbroek is a historic castle and park estate in the village of Vinderhoute, part of the municipality of Lievegem in East Flanders, Belgium, located along the Schouwbroekstraat and Bosstraat.
Originally, the site was a 16th‑century “hof van plaisance” (pleasure house or country villa) for the wealthy of Ghent, depicted in 1755 in the centre of an elaborate park that even included an amphitheatre. The main castle was extensively rebuilt in 1894 in an eclectic style by architect Achille Marchand for Firmin de Smet, a popular local mayor and patron of agriculture, combining elements reminiscent of medieval and baroque architecture and giving the building its current appearance as a substantial brick‑and‑stone mansion with a dominant 30‑metre‑high square corner tower likened to a medieval belfry.
The estate is surrounded by a large park laid out in the late 19th century in English landscape style, with a lake and islet, a grotto, ornamental bridges, a pavilion built above an icehouse, a greenhouse complex, and a rich collection of trees and plantings that once included special plants for the Ghent Floraliën. At the entrance behind an iron gate stand three monumental century‑old chestnut trees, possibly more than 400 years old, one of which is reputed to be the thickest chestnut tree in Belgium, and the domain also includes a service house with stables, a coachhouse and other buildings, all dating from the 1894 rebuilding phase.
