Kasteelhoeve Van Rampemont
Honnelles, Belgium, Belgium
The Kasteelhoeve van Rampemont (also called the Château‑Ferme de Rampemont or Commanderie de Rampemont) is a historic fortified farmhouse complex in the village of Fayt‑le‑Franc, a section of the municipality of Honnelles, province of Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium, whose known origins go back to the 13th century when the site comprised two lordships, one linked to the Templars and the other to the Counts of Hainaut, before becoming a Hospitaller commandery.
The present “castle‑farm” consists of two 17th‑century residential buildings (one later remodelled), a 1619 carriage shed, barns, stables and other farm buildings arranged around a large square courtyard enclosed by high walls and entered through a powerful 18th‑century gatehouse flanked by two square towers, forming a distinctive fortified ensemble that reflects both agricultural and military functions.
Over the centuries the commandery was leased to local exploiters, then for a period became a farm managed by tenants, and by the late 20th century it had fallen into serious decay; in 1992 it was bought by a small local enterprise that rehabilitated the buildings and part of the estate (about 5 hectares) in order to restore the site and make it accessible to the public, preserving its character as a medieval‑origin commandery and fortified farmhouse in the natural landscape of Honnelles.
