Kavala Fortress
Kavala, Greece, Greece
Kavala Fortress is a historic castle perched on the top of the Panagia peninsula in Kavala, northern Greece.
Built largely in its current form during the early 15th century on the remains of an older Byzantine acropolis, it was designed to protect the important Via Egnatia trade route and the city’s harbor. Over the centuries, the fortress was rebuilt and strengthened by Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.
The fortress consists of inner and outer defensive enclosures, thick stone walls, towers, a cistern, storage areas, and a prominent circular tower that served as the last line of defense. Its elevated position provided excellent natural protection and strategic views over the surrounding area. Today, Kavala Fortress is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and best-preserved monuments.
Visitors can explore its historic structures, climb the central tower for panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea, and attend cultural events held within its grounds. The fortress offers a fascinating glimpse into Kavala’s long history and remains a symbol of the city’s strategic and cultural importance through the centuries.
