Verified Kazarma Fortress

Sitia, Greece, Greece

Kazarma Fortress is the historic fortress that overlooks the town and harbor of Sitia on the eastern coast of Crete.

Built by the Venetians in the 13th century, it served as the town’s main defensive stronghold and took its name from the Italian phrase Casa di Arma, meaning “guard barracks.” Over the centuries, the fortress suffered repeated damage from earthquakes, pirate attacks, and invasions. Major earthquakes in 1303 and 1508 weakened the structure, while the Ottoman attack led by Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1538 caused further destruction.

When the Venetians abandoned Sitia in 1651, parts of the fortress were intentionally demolished to prevent their use by the Ottomans, who later rebuilt and modified sections of it. The fortress seen today contains a mix of Venetian and Ottoman features, including defensive walls, towers, courtyards, and interior buildings.

Its elevated position provided excellent views of the harbor and made it a key military site for centuries. Today, Kazarma Fortress is one of Sitia’s most important landmarks. Visitors come to explore its historic architecture, learn about the region’s layered history, and enjoy panoramic views of Sitia, its bay, and the surrounding landscape.
