The Kerma Archaeological Site, near Dongola in Sudan’s Northern State, is one of the most important ancient sites in Nubia and was the capital of the powerful Kingdom of Kerma, which flourished between about 2500 BC and 1500 BC. It represents one of the earliest major urban civilizations in sub-Saharan Africa and played a significant role in trade and cultural exchange along the Nile River. The site contains the remains of an ancient city, royal cemeteries, and the famous Western Deffufa, a massive mudbrick ceremonial structure that is among the oldest and largest of its kind in Africa.
