Kiiu Castle
Kiiu, Estonia, Estonia
Kiiu Castle (Kiiu Tower or Kiiu Vassal Stronghold) in Kiiu, northern Estonia, is a small medieval stone tower effectively classified as a “vassal castle”—a defensive tower built for a local knightly family rather than a major fortress for large battles.
The estate was first mentioned in 1348 and wooden fortifications may then have existed, but the stone tower was built around 1520 by Fabian von Tiesenhausen, a powerful Baltic‑German noble of the Tiesenhausen family, on an irregular oval plan about 8 meters in diameter with four storeys and originally surrounded by a limestone wall and outbuildings forming a courtyard.
It functioned partly as living quarters (with fireplaces, latrines and a bed alcove on the residential floors) and partly as a defensive stronghold, using numerous loopholes and embrasures and a spiral staircase embedded in the thick wall, while the reconstructed wooden hoarding surrounding the third storey is unique in Estonia.
Damaged during the Livonian War (16th century) and left in ruins for centuries, the tower was restored in 1973–1974 under art historian Villem Raam, partially reconstructing the highest floor and the wooden porch to return it to its late‑medieval appearance, and today it houses a restaurant and is one of only two fully preserved tower houses in Estonia (along with Vao Tower).
