Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a world‑renowned botanical garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, celebrated for its dramatic mountain backdrop and for showcasing South Africa’s indigenous flora, especially the Cape fynbos. Established in 1913 on an estate of about 528 hectares, it cultivates more than 6,000–7,000 plant species almost entirely native to southern Africa within about 36 hectares of landscaped garden, including themed areas such as the Protea Garden, Fynbos Garden, useful plants and fragrance gardens, a conservatory for plants from arid regions, and the raised “Boomslang” tree‑canopy walkway. The garden forms part of the Cape Floristic Region UNESCO World Heritage Site and functions as both a major tourist attraction and a centre for plant conservation and research, while also serving as a popular venue for walks, picnics and outdoor concerts, with daily opening hours that extend into the evening in summer and tiered entry fees with discounts for local residents, students and pensioners.
