Koroni's Castle
Koroni, Greece, Greece
Koroni Castle is a large medieval fortress overlooking the town of Koroni on the southwestern coast of the Peloponnese in Greece.
Originally built during the Byzantine period on the site of ancient Asine, it was later expanded and heavily fortified by the Venetians, who made it one of their most important strongholds in the eastern Mediterranean. Together with the nearby fortress of Methoni, Koroni controlled key sea routes between Venice and the East, earning the nickname “the Eyes of Venice.”
Its strategic harbor helped the town become a prosperous center for trade from the 13th to the 17th centuries. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands between the Venetians and Ottomans several times, leading to repeated expansions, sieges, and periods of damage. Despite these conflicts, many sections of its walls, towers, gates, churches, cisterns, and other historic structures have survived.
