Kožljak Castle
Kožljak, Croatia, Croatia
Kožljak Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a steep 184-meter cliff in Kožljak village, Kršan municipality, Istria County, Croatia, guarding an ancient road linking Istria to Kvarner since prehistoric times.
First mentioned in 1102 as Wachsenstein (meaning "cliff of refuge"), it originated from a Histrian hillfort and passed through hands like the Counts of Gorizia, Venetians, Patriarchate of Aquileia, and Barbo family, who made it a Protestant and Glagolitic hub in the 16th-17th centuries before its decline.
Featuring remnants of walls, semi-circular towers, a prison, residential areas, and the Romanesque Church of St. Hadrian below, the site offers hiking access via rock-carved stairs amid Učka mountain scenery, drawing history buffs to its rugged, abandoned charm.
