Kritinia Castle
Greece, Greece
Kritinia Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a hill above the village of Kritinia on the island of Rhodes, Greece.
Built by the Knights of Saint John in the 15th century, it was designed to defend the island’s western coast from pirate raids and Ottoman attacks while providing a strategic lookout over the Aegean Sea. Its elevated position offers sweeping views of the sea and nearby islands, including Chalki, making it an ideal location for monitoring maritime activity.
The castle combines Byzantine and Western European medieval architectural features and once formed part of a larger network of fortifications across Rhodes. Although much of the structure is now in ruins, visitors can still see sections of the outer walls, coats of arms of the Knights’ Grand Masters, and the remains of a chapel with traces of 16th-century frescoes.
Today, Kritinia Castle is a popular historical landmark known for its rich medieval heritage, peaceful atmosphere, and spectacular sunset views, making it one of the most scenic castle sites on Rhodes.
