Kyneton Botanic Gardens
Kyneton, Australia, Australia
The Kyneton Botanic Gardens are a historic century-old garden in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia, established in 1858 and permanently reserved as public gardens in 1867, making them among the finest botanic gardens in Central Victoria's small goldfields towns.
Located on the traditional lands of the Taungurung people along the banks of the Campaspe River, the gardens feature a remarkable collection of magnificent mature specimen trees set in lawns sloping down to the river, with 17 trees recognized as significant by the National Trust of Australia, including three of State significance: the endangered Chilean Wine Palm, Coast Live Oak, and Variegated Portuguese Laurel, plus impressive collections of oaks with at least 13 varieties, Atlas and Blue Atlas cedars, Deodar Cedars, Giant and Coast Redwoods, Douglas Firs, and uncommon Himalayan White Pines.
The gardens preserve charming heritage features including beautiful bluestone garden walls, a striking old-worldly wrought iron main gate, a historic 1902 drinking fountain, a beautifully restored gardener's cottage from the garden's early years, a charming rotunda, and a whimsical fairy ring of trees, all accessible via a scenic riverside walk along the Campaspe River.
The site also includes the Kyneton Community Park with an inclusive, nature-based play and water park experience designed for all ages and abilities, has ample lawns and pathways with well-established trees providing shade, and is popular with both locals and visitors for its stunning autumn colors and picture-perfect areas ideal for wedding photography, just a few minutes' drive from Kyneton's center or a few minutes' walk from the railway line, with the Friends of Kyneton Botanic Gardens actively working alongside Macedon Ranges Shire Council to maintain and rejuvenate the gardens according to a 2011 master plan while dogs on leads are welcome throughout.
