Verified La Ferté-Milon

Hauts-de-France, France

La Ferté-Milon is a small historic town in the Hauts-de-France region, situated on the Ourcq River. It is best known for the ruins of an unfinished castle started in 1392 by Louis I, Duke of Orléans, who was assassinated in 1407, halting construction.

The castle's massive façade, designed to resist cannon fire, along with remaining towers and a moat, hint at the grandeur the fortress would have achieved. The town also features a 12th to 17th century Notre-Dame church with an unusual clock tower, historic fortified gates, and a metallic footbridge designed by Gustave Eiffel. La Ferté-Milon is the birthplace of the famous 17th-century dramatist Jean Racine, commemorated with statues and a museum.

Another notable museum in the town is dedicated to agricultural machinery, housing one of Europe's largest tractor collections. The Ourcq River and its canal, once used to supply Paris, now offer scenic walking paths and boating opportunities. The town blends medieval charm with cultural heritage, making it a quiet yet historically rich destination.
