Lagarde is a small village in the Ariège department of southwestern France, with a population of just over 200 residents.

Situated in the historic Cathar region near Mirepoix, it is surrounded by rolling countryside and enjoys views toward the Pyrenees. The village is best known for the impressive ruins of the Château de Lagarde, a medieval fortress that was expanded over centuries and later transformed into a grand residence. Because of its scale and former formal gardens, it earned the nickname “Versailles of the Pyrenees.”

Originally built as a defensive stronghold in the Middle Ages, the castle played an important role in the history of the region, particularly during and after the Albigensian Crusade. Although partially destroyed during the French Revolution, its ruins remain a striking landmark. Today, Lagarde is appreciated for its rich history, peaceful rural setting, and remarkable castle ruins, making it an attractive destination for visitors interested in heritage and the landscapes of southern France.
