Lazarus Island
Southern Islands, Singapore
Lazarus Island is a small resort‑style island located among Singapore’s Southern Islands, reachable by ferry from mainland Singapore via St. John’s Island.
It was once known as Pulau Sakijang Pelepah and served in the past as a penal colony and quarantine station for diseases such as cholera, beri‑beri, and leprosy, with the name “Lazarus” likely linked to that medical‑island history.
Today the island is best known for its long, wide sandy beach and calm turquoise waters, making it a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and simple seaside relaxation away from the city. Recent upgrades include low‑impact “tiny houses” and glamping options, a container‑based convenience store, and non‑motorised water‑sports activities.
All set within a protected, nature‑friendly area that is also being developed as part of Singapore’s second marine park at Lazarus South‑Kusu Reef.
