Verified Le château Coulon

Wanze, Belgium, Belgium

Le château Coulon is a small, classified manor house in the hamlet of Bas-Oha, part of the municipality of Wanze in the province of Liège, Belgium, situated along the Meuse river on rue Romainville together with two other nearby châteaux.

It is the most modest of these three riverside estates and consists of an L-shaped group of buildings reached through a square, 4.5‑metre‑wide gate tower (porte-porche) that was probably erected in the 15th century and built of small limestone blocks with dressed corner stones.

The tower’s ground floor still has its original vaulted passage with a pointed arch, while its upper floor, altered in the 17th century, features a cross-mullioned window beside a 15th–16th century Gothic niche that once held a statue of Saint Barbara, and behind the tower there is an 18th-century mullioned window.

Extension to the east of the gate tower is a main building raised and reshaped in several phases, with mixed masonry of limestone and sandstone blocks together with brick insertions, reflecting its 19th-century conversion into a tile works (tuilerie) and later modifications.

At the rear of the complex, two small ancillary buildings in stone and brick complete the ensemble, and the whole property, including its facade and roof, was officially listed as a protected monument on 21 December 1977, preserving one of the few surviving medieval gate towers from the early fortified structures that once stood in Bas-Oha.
