Le Château d'Ouhar
Anthisnes, Belgium, Belgium
Le Château d’Ouhar is a Renaissance-style country castle just north of the village of Anthisnes in the Liège province of Belgium, with origins spread across the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries and a distinctive appearance of brick and cut stone.
The main residential building is a massive, slender house front flanked by a narrow tower topped with a bulbous, onion-shaped roof, while the surrounding ancillary buildings are simpler local stone structures dated to the late 19th century. Historical records show that the estate was a fief of the avouerie (advocary) of Anthisnes from at least 1470 and was held by numerous noble families over time, and the current château was probably built around 1647 by Laurent de Charneux, a member of the ordinary council of Prince-Bishop Maximilian Henry of Bavary.
Today the property is privately owned and visits are only possible on prior appointment, but it remains a recognized landmark in the Anthisnes area, often mentioned alongside other local historic sites such as the medieval Château de l’Avouerie and the nearby Château de Vien when describing the castle-rich landscape of north-eastern Condroz.
