Le clos de Chokier

“Le clos de Chokier” refers to the vineyard and small wine estate on the steep limestone slopes above the village of Chokier, in the municipality of Flémalle along the Meuse river in the province of Liège, Wallonia, Belgium.

The site is part of the historic “Coteaux de Dame Palate” area, where wine was already cultivated in the 11th and 12th centuries and where, in 1682, 22 vineyards were recorded in Chokier, giving the village a strong viticultural tradition that later shifted to horticulture and disappeared almost completely in the 19th century.

The current vineyard is actively produced by a local “wine lover” who continues to grow and bottle wine on the Coteaux de Dame Palate under the appellation “Côtes de Sambre et Meuse”, one of the few vineyards kept in production in the region, and the terroir is associated with the medieval legend of Dame Palate, a figure who supposedly lived in a tower on the hill and whose story is linked to the identity of the village and its slopes.

While there is no single publicly named “clos of Chokier” with an official estate building or visitor centre, the term alludes to this rediscovered, small hillside vineyard and to the broader landscape of historic vineyards and terraces that run along the Meuse above Chokier, celebrated in guided walks such as the “Les Nouvelles Légendes de Chokier” promenade that highlights the village’s legends and heritage.
