Founded in 1301 by Count Amadeus V of Savoy, Les Marches was originally built as a fortified border town to defend Savoy from neighboring territories. The village still preserves traces of its medieval heritage, including its historic street layout, castle, and old stone buildings.

The area is also famous for its vineyards and the nearby slopes created by the dramatic collapse of Mont Granier in 1248, which shaped the local landscape and helped create the conditions for renowned Savoie wines such as Apremont and Abymes.
