Lichtenstein Castle
Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, South Africa
Lichtenstein Castle is a striking, mock‑Gothic “castle” perched high on the slopes of Karbonkelberg Mountain in Hout Bay, Cape Town, overlooking the bay, the harbour, and Chapman’s Peak Drive, and it is widely regarded as Hout Bay’s most iconic and romantic landmark.
Built as a replica of the famous 19th‑century Schloss Lichtenstein in southern Germany (Württemberg), the six‑storey castle was commissioned by German‑born South African businessman and architect Reynier Fritz, with construction starting in 1986 and completion in 1998, and it was built using local stone and clay bricks with neo‑Gothic details such as towers, battlements, arched windows, spiral staircases, drawbridges, and panoramic terraces that recreate a medieval European feel on the African coast.
The estate sits on about 8.6 hectares and includes features such as 12 en‑suite bedrooms (various listings mention 7 double rooms, 4 single rooms, and a honeymoon suite, or 4 bedrooms plus a honeymoon suite for private stays), a library, a banquet or ballroom, a swimming pool, a helipad, and even a natural waterfall, giving it the scale and amenities of a grand private estate rather than a typical ancient castle.
