Verified Losange Castle

Bastogne, Belgium, Belgium

Losange Castle (Château de Losange) is an 18th‑century white limestone château in the hamlet of Villers‑la‑Bonne‑Eau, part of Bastogne in the Belgian Ardennes, surrounded by a large forested park and situated close to the town of Bastogne.

It was first built on the site in 1529 near a pond, but the present structure dates from the early 1700s, commissioned by Herman de Trappé, and was later modernised and remodelled in the 1920s, giving it the elegant, classical appearance it retains today.

The castle is famous in Belgium as the childhood home of Queen Mathilde, who spent her youth there with her four siblings, and it was also a favoured summer residence for the van den Steen de Jehay and Snoy families, who once hosted members of the royal family, including Princess Astrid and Princess Marie‑José.

During the Battle of the Bulge in winter 1944–45 the château suffered serious damage, but it was fully restored after the war and again in the 1970s, and while the interior remains private as a noble residence, visitors can see its exterior architecture and walk the surrounding 300‑hectare park and forest.
