Mahdi’s Tomb
Omdurman, Khartoum State, Sudan
Mahdi’s Tomb in Omdurman, Khartoum State, is one of Sudan’s most important historical and religious landmarks.
The tomb is the burial place of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, the Sudanese religious leader who led a successful revolt against Turco-Egyptian rule and established the Mahdist State in 1885. It quickly became a major symbol of Sudanese identity and an important pilgrimage site.
The original tomb was heavily damaged after the Battle of Omdurman in 1898 during the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of Sudan, but it was rebuilt in 1947 under the direction of the Mahdi’s son, ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Mahdi. Located beside the Khalifa House Museum, the distinctive domed monument remains a powerful reminder of Sudan’s history, religious heritage, and struggle for independence.
