Mapungubwe
Weipe, South Africa, South Africa
Mapungubwe is an ancient Iron Age archaeological site and cultural landscape in northern Limpopo, South Africa, near the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers on the border with Zimbabwe and Botswana; Weipe is simply a nearby farm in the same region.
The name Mapungubwe means “hill of the jackal,” and the site includes the prominent Mapungubwe Hill, a long, narrow ridge that was transformed between the 11th and 13th centuries into the royal center of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, the earliest known class-based state in the southern African subcontinent. Archaeological research shows that royal elites lived in a palace on top of the hill, physically separated from commoners in settlements below.
The kingdom thrived as a sophisticated trading hub exchanging gold and ivory with distant regions such as Arabia, India, and China through East African ports, while receiving glass beads, cloth, and Chinese porcelain in return. The kingdom reached its peak between about 1200 and 1300 AD, but around 1300 it declined, likely due to a combination of climate change that made farming and herding harder and shifts in trade routes, after which its political center moved to Great Zimbabwe.
