Martello Tower

River, South Barbuda, Antigua and Barbuda

---

The Martello Tower, also known as River Fort, is a historic defensive structure located near River on the southern coast of Barbuda, Antigua and Barbuda.

Built during the early 19th century to protect the island’s main landing area and anchorage, it is considered one of the oldest Martello-style towers in the Caribbean and remains the tallest historic structure on Barbuda. Constructed with thick stone walls and a circular design, the tower was part of a fortification system used by the British during a period of colonial rivalry and naval threats.

Its elevated position provided a strategic lookout over the coastline and surrounding waters. Today, the well-preserved ruin stands as one of Barbuda’s most important heritage landmarks. Visitors come to explore its military history, admire its unique architecture, and enjoy sweeping views of the island’s beaches, wetlands, and coastline, making it a fascinating blend of history and natural beauty.
